Kota stone is one of the most ordered limestones in India, and most enquiries we get start with the same two questions: what size, and how thick? This guide answers both, so you can send a clear requirement and get a correct price the first time.
What Kota Stone Is
Kota stone is a fine-grained limestone from the Kota region of Rajasthan. It is dense, hard wearing and has a smooth, even surface, which is why it has been used on floors, verandas and stairs across India for decades.
The two colours buyers ask for most are Kota Blue, a blue-grey shade, and Kota Brown. You can see both in our limestone range.
Common Kota Stone Sizes
Kota stone is sold in two broad forms: cut tiles of a fixed size, and larger slabs. These are the sizes we see ordered most often.
| Form | Size | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Small tile | 10 x 10 inch (about 250 x 250 mm) | Small rooms, borders, steps |
| Square tile | 600 x 600 mm (about 2 x 2 ft) | Room floors, verandas |
| Square tile | 22 x 22 inch (about 560 x 560 mm) | Floors in homes and offices |
| Rectangular slab | 2 x 3 ft (about 600 x 900 mm) | Large floors, parking, courtyards |
| Random slab | Random length and width | Factories, godowns, outdoor areas where cutting is done on site |
Any of these can be cut to a custom size. If your drawings call for a size that is not in the table, send it to us and we will tell you whether it can be cut from the slabs in stock.
Common Kota Stone Thickness
Thickness matters more than most buyers expect. It decides how much load the floor can take, how heavy each container is, and a large part of the price.
- 15 mm: light use, such as small rooms and wall areas.
- 18 to 22 mm: the most common range for home and office floors.
- 25 mm and above: heavy use, such as factories, parking areas and loading zones.
Thickness is never perfectly equal across natural stone. A small tolerance is normal, and calibrated tiles, where the back is machined to an even thickness, cost more than natural-back tiles.
Finish Changes The Look And The Grip
The same Kota stone looks very different in each finish. Pick the finish based on where the stone will be laid.
- Natural: the surface as it comes from the quarry, with good grip. Suits outdoor areas.
- Polished: machine polished for a shine. Suits indoor floors, but it can be slippery when wet.
- Leather or honed: smooth with a soft, low shine. A middle option for homes.
How To Work Out The Quantity
Measure the area in square feet or square metres, then add extra for cutting and breakage. For simple rectangular rooms, buyers usually add around 5 percent. For rooms with many corners, or for patterns, add more.
For export orders, tell us the total area or the number of containers. We will work out how much fits in a container for the size and thickness you choose.
What To Send Us For A Price
A complete enquiry gets a faster and more accurate quote. Please include:
- The colour, for example Kota Blue or Kota Brown.
- The size, or the drawing if the size is custom.
- The thickness.
- The finish.
- The quantity, and the delivery city or port.
You can send this on WhatsApp using the price form on our homepage. Natural stone varies from block to block, so ask us for photos of the current lot before you confirm an order.
Kota Stone Questions We Hear Often
Is Kota Blue Or Kota Brown Stronger?
Both come from the same limestone beds and are used in the same way. The choice is mostly about colour. Kota Blue gives a cool, grey look, and Kota Brown gives a warmer look that hides dust better.
Can Kota Stone Be Used Outdoors?
Yes. Choose a natural or leather finish for grip, and a thickness of 20 mm or more for areas with heavy use. Avoid a polished finish on outdoor steps and slopes.
Does Kota Stone Need Sealing?
Kota stone is dense, so many floors are laid without a sealer. A sealer helps in kitchens, outdoor dining areas and parking areas, where oil or acidic spills are common.
